Introduction and Background

The Municipality of Très-Saint-Sacrement was constituted on April 2nd, 1885. Blessed with some of the most fertile farmland in Quebec, its winding roads meander past large, well-maintained farms. Route 203 leads to the hamlet of Riverfield, the old stronghold of the English River community. The territory of the Municipality of Très-Saint-Sacrement, originally recognized as a parish, actually surrounds the Municipality of the Village of Howick, and includes the area known as "Village Saint-Pierre".

Within its territory is the Battle of the Chateauguay National Historic Site of Canada, which commemorates the victory of Canadian troups under the command of Charles-Michel de Salaberry over invading Amercian forces led by General Wade Hampton. The museum recalls the events of this feat of arms of 1813 on the banks of the Chateauguay River and the roles played by the different combatants in defending Canada.

The municipality's name attests to the profound faith and piety of its religious leaders at the time of its founding. Many of its roads bear the names of Howick's English-speaking descendants in recognition of the aid proffered to Très-Saint-Sacrement's pioneers : Rang des Irlandais, Montée des Irlandais, Rang des écossais, Chemin de la Rivière-des-Anglais (Irish Concession, Scotch Concession and English River Road) (Quebec's Toponomy Commission).
