Introduction and Background
The Municipality of Sainte-Barbe was constituted on June 12th, 1882. Today, as then, the territory's natural landscape makes it ideally suited for agricultural use and as a vacation destination. It is situated approximately 15 kilometers from Salaberry-de-Valleyfield on the banks of Lac Saint-François. The municipal library, affiliated with Réseau Biblio, was recently enlarged to accomodate more visitors, and is a vital link in the social and community life of Sainte-Barbe's residents. The Catholic Church of Sainte-Barbe, the only church in the municipality, was built in 1967 using plans prepared by Mr. Pierre Dionne, architect, and comprises a modern-form wooden vaulting. From May 15th to September 30th, a shuttle service will be available, via 39th Avenue, to transport people to The original parish was named by Monsignor édouard-Charles Fabre, Archbishop of Montreal, for Sainte-Barbe, who was canonized in 1568 and is celebrated in the Catholic Church on December 4th. The municipality's name also commemorates Madam Marie-Barbe de Boullongne (1618?-1685), wife of Governor Louis d'Ailleboust (1612?-1660) whom she married in 1638.
