Introduction and Background

The Municipality of Saint-Anicet was constituted on July 1st, 1855 and was named in recognition of the Catholic mission that was founded there in 1810 after Saint Anicetus, Pope and martyr, who is celebrated on April 17th. It was officially recognized as a Parish in 1827 (Saint-Anicet-de-Godmanchester).

Saint-Anicet's history begins in 1788 with a land survey for the Township of Godmanchester. Irish immigrants and French Canadians settled in the area about 1820 and two small settlements were established, Cazaville and La Guerre (named for François du La Guerre who settled there). Along with agriculture, two early commercial industries were timber and potash, around 1850. A famous family name associated with Saint-Anicet is Léger. Cardinal Paul-émile Léger was born in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield in 1904 and died in Montreal in 1991, and his brother, Jules Léger, was born in Saint-Anicet (1913-1980). Jules Léger was Governal-General of Canada from 1974-1979 (Quebec's Toponomy Commission).

The village centre of the municipality is close to the Catholic Church (consult architectural inventory project). Agriculture and recreational and tourist activities constitute the main economic sectors in Saint-Anicet. The Saint-Anicet Golf Club, the Port Lewis Marina, the Léger Commemorative Park, the municipal library affiliated with Réseau Biblio and the Droulers/Tsiionhiakwatha Archaeological Site Interpretation Center are important features in the life of the community and the municipality.
