Introduction and Background
The first settlers are Americans searching for fertile soils and a maritime route to Montreal's markets. Following the 1812-1814 war, most of them return to the United States and are replaced by settlers from Europe, mostly Scots. Around 1833, Anglophones call the village Howick Village and the Francophones name it the Village de la Fourche since the Châteauguay River and the Anglais River form a junction near the village. The municipality is named after Henri George Grey, viscount of Howick (1802-1894) and the State's under secretary for Great Britain's colonies. He apparently gave his name to the first post office to open on the territory in 1851 and to the municipality, officially created in 1915. The name of its inhabitants, Howickois, appears in 1978. City Hall shares its offices with the post office since 1958 and the model school, built in 1915, is now the community centre. Howick is an urban centre which territory is surrounded by the territory of Très-Saint-Sacrement. Routes 138 and 203 will get you there. Many services are accessible on the territory, such as Anglophone and Francophone primary schools, lodging units for senior citizens, a united church (1927) and a catholic church (1909). *Source, Population and Surface: Statistics Canada, 2006 Census of Population. |
